Previously Healthy: Looking into Type 1 Diabetes
(Click on the link below to view the video.)
Misdiagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes is common in children, the reason being is the symptoms mimic a simple virus. Since there is not enough awareness or education on Type 1 Diabetes, many parents are unaware, just as I was, that there is another "type" of diabetes. 40% of newly diagnosed children are in Diabetic Ketoacidosis, a life-threatening condition caused by high blood sugar due to lack of Insulin. DKA is life-threatening and can cause death if not treated immediately. Know the Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes and ask your child's doctor to do a simple finger-stick test to check for elevated blood glucose levels. Top four symptoms are frequent urination, unquenchable thirst, weakness/fatigue and weight loss. DON'T ASSUME IT'S A VIRUS, a one day delay can be the difference between life and death.
